Wild Ones Oak Openings Native Landscape Awards
By Denise Gehring, Native Landscape Award Chair
In 2012, our chapter established the Oak Openings Native Landscape Awards to recognize local native gardens and landscaping in residential, non-profit/public agency (includes schools), and commercial categories.
Our award program was developed by benchmarking native landscape awards of the Florida Native Plant Society, Chicago Wilderness/USEPA, and Wild Ones Seeds for Education. The program has served as a model for other Wild Ones chapters.
In 2013, Eric Peterson won the Residential Award, and Simpson Garden Park of Bowling Green won in the public agency category. Cinda Stutzman of Bowling Green Parks said: “Recognition of our native landscaping efforts by our local Wild Ones chapter has given us an additional opportunity to educate the public and city officials about the benefits of native plants.” Honorable Mentions were two Toledo GROWS community gardens: the Oneida Rain Garden and the Manos Terrace and Rain Gardens.
Award nominations are submitted by you, our chapter members. Nominations may be member or non-member sites in our chapter membership area.
Here’s an overview of the awards criteria:
– Nominated gardens need to be established for at least two years.
– Must be at least 50 % native species (local genotype preferred) that appropriately represent our local bio-region.
– Provide a list of native species and garden goal
– Note how invasives are managed
– Include a garden sketch or plan, and 3-5 garden photos
– Judges will consider garden design, and creativity. Signage if a public garden site. It is hoped that the judges can visit the nominated gardens.
This year’s award judges are: Tom Schoen, Robin Parker, and Nick Guthrie. If you have any questions or need assistance on the application process, feel free to contact: email@example.com.
We hope you’ll consider submitting a nomination for our chapter awards—your own garden, or one from our community. Awards will be presented this fall when we return for regular indoor chapter programs.
Submit your application electronically or in printed form by August 15 to: WildOnesOakOpeningsRegion@gmail.com or by mailing to Denise Gehring, Wild Ones, 5360 Dubois Rd. Toledo, OH 43615.
